What Is Taping?
Taping is a technique used to support muscles, tendons and joints during recovery, activity or rehabilitation.
Different taping methods may be used depending on the condition being treated. At The Bromley Physiotherapy and Injury Rehab Clinic, we commonly use:
- Kinesiology taping (K-Tape) to support muscle function and reduce strain on irritated tissues
- Sports taping to provide additional joint stability during activity
- Preventative taping to reduce the risk of injury during sport or exercise
Taping can help guide movement, offload stressed tissues and provide support while the body continues to recover.
It is typically used alongside:
- Movement assessment
- Rehabilitation exercises
- Manual therapy
- Load management advice
The goal is to support the injured area while restoring normal movement and strength.
What Conditions Can Taping Help With?
Taping may be beneficial for a range of musculoskeletal conditions, including:
- Muscle strains
- Ligament sprains
- Tendon irritation or tendinopathy
- Joint instability
- Knee pain (such as patellofemoral pain)
- Shoulder injuries
- Ankle sprains
- Sports-related injuries
Taping may also be used as a preventative strategy during training or competition.
What To Expect During Your Appointment
If taping is recommended, it will be applied as part of your physiotherapy treatment session following a detailed assessment.
Your therapist will assess the affected area and determine the most appropriate taping method.
Depending on your condition, this may involve:
- Kinesiology tape applied to assist muscle function
- Sports tape applied to stabilise a joint
- Preventative taping to support movement during activity
The tape is applied in a specific pattern designed to support the injured area while allowing safe movement.
Your therapist will also advise you on:
- How long to keep the tape applied
- Activities you can safely perform
- When the tape should be removed
Taping is usually combined with rehabilitation exercises to support long-term recovery.
