What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica refers to pain that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the buttock and down the back of the leg.

It usually occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes irritated or compressed, often due to issues in the lower back such as disc irritation or joint inflammation. This can cause symptoms not only in the lower back, but also in the buttock, thigh or leg.

Sciatica symptoms can range from mild discomfort to more persistent nerve-related pain that affects walking, sitting or standing for long periods.

People experiencing sciatica may notice:

  • Pain travelling from the lower back into the buttock or leg
  • Tingling or pins and needles in the leg
  • Burning or sharp nerve pain
  • Numbness in parts of the leg or foot
  • Pain that worsens when sitting for long periods

Symptoms are typically felt on one side of the body.

At The Bromley Physiotherapy and Injury Rehab Clinic, we assess spinal movement, nerve sensitivity and muscle function to understand what may be contributing to your symptoms.

Treatment may include:

  • Manual therapy to improve spinal mobility
  • Exercises to reduce nerve irritation and improve movement
  • Strengthening work for the back and core
  • Advice on posture and daily activity modification

The aim is to reduce nerve irritation, restore comfortable movement and help prevent symptoms from
