What Is a Frozen Shoulder?

Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition that causes stiffness and reduced movement in the shoulder joint.

It occurs when the capsule surrounding the shoulder joint becomes irritated and tight, gradually restricting movement. Symptoms often develop slowly and may progress through stages, beginning with pain and eventually leading to significant stiffness in the shoulder.

Frozen shoulders can make everyday activities such as reaching overhead, dressing or lifting the arm uncomfortable and difficult.

People experiencing frozen shoulder may notice:

  • Gradual onset of shoulder pain
  • Increasing stiffness in the shoulder
  • Difficulty lifting the arm overhead
  • Reduced range of movement in the shoulder
  • Pain when reaching behind the back or out to the side

Symptoms can sometimes persist for several months if movement becomes increasingly restricted.

At The Bromley Physiotherapy and Injury Rehab Clinic, we assess shoulder movement, joint mobility and muscle function to understand the stage and severity of your condition.

Treatment may include:

  • Gentle manual therapy to improve joint mobility
  • Mobility exercises to gradually restore movement
  • Strengthening exercises to support the shoulder
  • Advice on safe movement and activity modification

The aim is to gradually improve shoulder mobility, reduce discomfort and help you regain normal use of of your arm.
