What Is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is a common joint condition that occurs when the protective cartilage within a joint gradually wears down over time. Cartilage normally allows joints to move smoothly and helps absorb forces during movement.

When this cartilage becomes thinner or irritated, the joint can become stiff, painful and less comfortable during everyday activities. Osteoarthritis most commonly affects joints such as the knees, hips, hands and spine.

Symptoms often develop gradually and may become more noticeable during activities such as walking, climbing stairs or prolonged standing.

People with osteoarthritis may notice:

  • Joint stiffness, particularly in the morning
  • Pain during movement or weight-bearing activities
  • Reduced range of movement in the joint
  • Swelling or tenderness around the joint
  • Discomfort after prolonged activity

Symptoms can vary depending on the joint affected.

At The Bromley Physiotherapy and Injury Rehab Clinic, we assess joint movement, muscle strength and overall function to understand how the joint is being affected.

Treatment may include:

  • Exercises to improve strength around the joint
  • Mobility exercises to maintain joint movement
  • Soft tissue techniques to reduce surrounding muscle tension
  • Advice on activity modification and joint protection

The aim is to improve joint function, reduce discomfort and help you stay active and mobile.
