What Are Carpal and Cubital Tunnel Syndromes?

Carpal tunnel syndrome and cubital tunnel syndrome are conditions caused by irritation or compression of nerves in the arm.

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve becomes compressed at the wrist, often leading to symptoms in the hand and fingers. Cubital tunnel syndrome occurs when the ulnar nerve becomes irritated at the elbow, which can affect the forearm, hand and fingers.

These conditions commonly develop due to repetitive movements, prolonged positions of the wrist or elbow, or increased pressure on the nerves.

People with carpal or cubital tunnel syndrome may experience:

  • Tingling or pins and needles in the hand or fingers
  • Numbness in the fingers
  • Weakness in the hand or grip
  • Pain in the wrist, forearm or elbow
  • Symptoms that worsen at night or during repetitive activities

Symptoms may vary depending on which nerve is affected.

At The Bromley Physiotherapy and Injury Rehab Clinic, we assess nerve sensitivity, joint movement and muscle function to understand what may be contributing to your symptoms.

Treatment may include:

  • Exercises to improve nerve mobility
  • Strengthening work for the hand, wrist and forearm
  • Advice on posture and activity modification
  • Guidance on reducing pressure on the affected nerve

The aim is to reduce nerve irritation, restore comfortable movement and help prevent symptoms from worsening.
